Dental Implants Rekos & Border Oral Surgery OH 43017-7558Even though many are already turning to dental implants to enhance their teeth and restore function, it is important that before you jump into the craze, proper research should be done.

This is essential so you will know what to expect, what the possible effects are, and the length of the process. Like any other surgical procedure, dental implants also have side effects. Let us look into it and know its proper management.

Side Effects of Dental Implants and Proper Management

Pain is the most common side effect after dental implant surgery, just after the anesthesia wears off. To manage the pain, pain reliever is prescribed as take-home medications.

It is also advised to apply a cold or warm compress to reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Swelling and inflammation is due to the trauma caused by the procedure to the gums and underlying tissues.

This usually wears off within a few days and is a normal postoperative effect. You will also feel discomfort in the implant area. While this is very common, just avoid applying force so that the gums will heal faster.

Infection can also happen, if poor oral hygiene is practiced or you do not take your prescribed antibiotic meds. After surgery, bleeding can occur, but very minimal. To manage, apply a gauze pack or use cold compresses. Usually, medication to control bleeding is given along with antibiotics and pain relievers.

Rejection, this is a very rare side effect. The implant is usually composed of titanium. Some people have an allergy to this metal, or their immune system would identify it as a foreign body and reject it. This happens commonly to people who smoke, so if you are a non-smoker you have lesser chance of rejection.

Following our instructions and advice about proper care and oral hygiene is the best way to hasten the healing of the implant. Rest assured that you are in good hands with our professional staff and dentists, who have good track records and years of experience with dental implants.
