What is facial trauma?

Facial trauma is a term that can refer to an injury or defect to the face that results in some internal or external disfigurement, limiting the functionality of bone or organs. This can be from an accident, a fight, genetics, or any other number of reasons. Facial trauma can include soft tissue (in instances such as burn victims or deep cuts), broken bones (usually the nose or jaw), or other forms of trauma.
These can include problems such as ear, eye, or sinus injuries. These injuries can result in loss of function. If you have a broken jaw, for example, it would be terribly difficult to eat, drink, speak, or breathe. A traumatic injury to the eye may result in blindness. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons can help to repair the damage done to the bone in different ways.

What kinds of treatments can help facial trauma?

There are all kinds of possible injuries, so there needs to be an equal variety of solutions. For example, if you experience a broken bone within your face, there isn't a way for a doctor to put a cast on it, right? However, maxillofacial surgeons can adjust and repair the damage using wires or small screws to hold it in place as it heals, returning your face to a pain-free and cosmetically improved state. If your bones are fine, but you have lacerations on your face, then we can stitch those right up to get you more quickly on the road to recovery.

We also specialize in surgical procedures within your mouth. For one example, if you have had a tooth cleanly knocked out in an injury or accident, often it can be repaired and reinserted, but the sooner, the better. We can also put in a fake tooth in its place if the ligaments required are no longer strong enough or existent. If your tooth was shifted, but not completely knocked out, we could splint it with wires or other materials to keep it in place to allow it to heal naturally. Whatever the problem is, we are sure to have a way to help.
