Sleep Apnea Drs. Scheetz & Rekos: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Ohio OH 43017Everybody needs to have adequate sleep, it's good for our health. Having good, quality sleep helps you to remain focused and stay productive. It keeps your brain elastic while improving your mood.

Patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea may not get the adequate sleep they need. Some people with obstructive sleep apnea may be treated through oral surgery. An oral surgeon can help you when you have sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Affects Your Health

People with sleep apnea have difficulties in breathing. Their breathing stops and starts while they are asleep. You can think of the respiratory system as a straw that you use to inhale and exhale through.

In people with sleep apnea, it's as if a rubber flap is partially or completely blocking their airways. An individual will need to inhale and exhale hard so that they force air through. Exhaling hard makes the flap to vibrate something that contributes to noise while you sleep.

This is the reason people having sleep apnea tend to snore. Sleep apnea causes teeth grinding, headaches, cardiovascular stress, fatigue, daytime drowsiness, night sweats, snoring, and nighttime restlessness. It also causes depression, irritability, and forgetfulness.

If you have sleep apnea, you may have reduced concentration and productivity. In children, the disorder causes bedwetting, learning disorders, and trouble socializing.

When Oral Surgery is Needed

Some patients may need to use positive air pressure (PAP) machine that helps with breathing at night. For some patients, they may find it difficult to adjust to the use of the machine, meaning an alternative treatment may be recommended for example, surgery.

We can help you determine if oral surgery is an option for you. We will look at the extent, type, as well as the location of the blockage and see which treatment works best for you.

Don't let sleep apnea interfere with the quality of life you lead. Come to us and we will offer you an effective treatment to help stop sleep apnea and ensure you get adequate sleep.
