Common Limitations Following Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery Drs. Scheetz & Rekos: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Ohio OH 43017There are always limitations that happen following oral surgery. This is due to the fact that when you have something cut and removed, you have to make sure to take care of the wound area so that it heals correctly.

One of the biggest concerns with this type of surgery is dry socket and infection. You do not want either of these things to happen so following the discharge and care instructions that you were given is always a good thing to do.

Common Care Instructions Given Following Oral Surgery

Making sure that you rinse your mouth with salt water and clean it thoroughly except right over the incision site is recommended. This is to ensure that the bacteria in the mouth do not cause problems for the person.

Additionally, when this is done the person should refrain from spitting since this forceful action can cause the blood clot in the mouth to come undone.

Straws are not something that should be used for up to a week or more following oral surgery to ensure that the blood clot stays where it needs to stay during the healing process. Eating soft foods is always recommended since the mouth is going to be sore for some time while it heals.

The person should also refrain from strenuous exercise for up to a week to ensure that the incision area heals. This is something that can be hard to stay away from, but it is important to reduce the amount of pressure going to the mouth area, especially if the person is a runner or swimmer.
